An Indian Classic

Teen Patti is actually a very popular game in India. The name has nothing to do with teenagers! Teen Patti is a Hindi name which actually means “three cards” in English.

Why three?

Because it has origins in the three-card brag game which comes from England. It also has subtle hints of poker. The game is so popular in India, that there’s even a Bollywood thriller film based on it starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley!

Many Indians enjoy Teen Patti and it is known as a popular social pastime, with roots tracing back to the Diwali celebrations.

Teen Patti is played using 52 cards (in an Anglo-American deck) and requires skills such as counting. Each game is played clockwise and can squeeze in a maximum number of 10 players. The game is not time-based, which theoretically means that you can play it for an eternity!

Teen Patti Jargon

Before we go into details about this game, there are a few special Teen Patti terms that you should know before you start playing:

Boot:  Nope, not the kind you wear in winter!

Boot refers to the equal amount that each player chips in before the Teen Patti game starts. You will also hear it being referred to as the pot, ante, or entry fee which is a required bet if you want to play a Teen Patti hand.

It is usually a small amount and you will usually see boots that are a half or one-fourth of the minimum bet amount. The idea of a required bet might be off-putting at first. But it is actually there for a good reason.

Because of the boot, players tend to stay in the game for longer periods of time, which means the size of the boot also increases as the game progresses, resulting in a more exciting gambling experience. 

Blind: A forced bet in Teen Patti, which is made into the boot amount by one or more players before a deal is made, is referred to as a blind bet.

This type of bet is made to make betting during the game more invigorating. The most popular way to employ blinds as a betting structure is with two blinds: the small blind, which is placed by the player immediately following the dealer, and the big blind, which is placed by the player behind them (big blind).

The most prevalent structure of play is this two-blind structure, occasionally with antes. Occasionally, only one blind (half or full bet) is made use of. You will also hear the term “blind player”.

These are the Teen Patti Game players who choose to go in blind and not view their cards before playing. When these players place bets, their bets are considered stake amounts. That’s another term for you to keep an eye out for. 

Chaal: Known as Call and Raise, both of which are typically referred to as Chaal, this can be separated into two parts of the total bet.

Each participant must make a bet that is at least as much as the one made by the person before them, with the option to increase the bet. Then, this bet becomes the (new) bet at the current level ( which is referred to as Chaal). The raise usually has a limit, so the total bet (including the call and the raise) cannot be more than twice as much as the previous player’s bet.

Additionally, the bet must be placed in even quantities, particularly if there is still one blind player left in the game. It is because the blind player only places half the usual bet, and odd numbers cannot be divided in half. 

What Are the Teen Patti Rules?

Just like with any other game, the Teen Patti game comes with its own set of rules. Let’s take a look at some of the most important ones:

• You must play until you get a set of three cards which will allow you to boost the pot before the showdown arrives.   
• Make sure you have at least 3 players, and at most 10. The sweet spot is usually 3-6 players.
• The Teen Patti rules specify that this game can only be played using 52-card decks.
• The cards rank from A, K, Q, J, 10 and all the way to 2. 2 holds the lowest rank while aces hold the highest.

How to Play Teen Patti

1. Specify who the dealer will be: you can do this simply by drawing cards. Whoever draws the highest card, gets to be the dealer. After each round is played, go around the players in a clockwise direction so you can pick the dealer for each round using the same card drawing method.
2. Bring in the boot! Remember the boot or the ante? Collect it from every player in the round to create the “pot.” This boot determines the game’s difficulty because every round’s pot is limited to 1024 times the boot (unless you play sans limits).
3. Get your cards from the dealer: Have the dealer deal out three face-down cards to themselves first, and then clockwise to each player.
4. Let the act begin! It’s up to the player on the left of the dealer to kick off the game. They can either go in blind or seen. They can fold, call or raise the boot if they play blind. If not, they can double the boot or raise to double it again. Regardless of the bet they make, we will refer to it as a stake
5. The acting goes on: Each player will have the choice of folding, calling, or raising as a blind or seen player as the online Teen Patti game round progresses clockwise. The current stake established by the previous player and whether the current player is blind or seen determine how much a player can bet. It is either 1x or 2x the stake if you are blind, and either 2x or 4x the stake if you are a seen player. The stake will always be half as large when the player who previously acted is seen as opposed to when the player was blind.
6. It’s Side-Show time! If there are still at least three players in the game and a seen player is acting after another seen player, the acting player may ask for a side-show with the earlier player who was in the acting position. The requested player has the option to accept or reject the request. Should they choose to accept the request, both players will reveal their cards to one another away from everyone’s eyes. The Teen Patti game will then continue while the person with the weakest hand ranking is eliminated. 
7. Ask for a showdown: One of the players has the right to demand a final showdown after enough players have folded or sideshows have taken place to the point of only two players being left in the game. If they do not demand it, the player must fold or call. If they raise, both players will reveal their hands, and the person with the best hand will take home the entire pot.
8. Opt for alternative showdowns: Once a pot limit has been achieved in a pot-limited game, a different showdown may take place. For instance, if the pot limit is set to 1234 times the starting ante, then when the pot reaches this amount, all players must reveal their cards.

Now that you know how to play Teen Patti, let’s move on to the sequences. 

The Teen Patti Sequence 

When we say Teen Patti sequence, we are talking about the order that each set of three cards comes in. The highest hand in the game is when you have three cards that are all the same value, even though they follow different sets, for example 3 Aces. Just as a reminder, the lowest value in Teen Patti is 2, while Aces are the highest. Later on you will see how there are exceptions to the rules.

There are a number of Teen Patti sequence logics that you should know before you start playing. Each of them has different values. Let’s take a look at the 6 main ranking orders you need to understand:

• Trail: Three cards which have the same rank (3 Kings, 3 Aces, 3 2s, etc.). This is also called Trio, and the probability of getting a trail is 0.24%.
• Pure Sequence: Three cards in the same suit which are in successive order. We also call this a Straight Flush. For example, the Ace of Spades followed by the King and Queen of Spades. 
• Straight: While it is comparable to the pure sequence, the player need not have the same suit. A sequence is created when the cards are dealt consecutively. A Jack of Spades, a Queen of Hearts, and a Kind of Diamonds are a few examples. If two players receive a series of identical cards, in some variations,  the hands rank according to suit or the pot money is divided evenly.
• Colour: Three cards that follow the same suit but are not in sequential order. In other words, when a player has a hand of cards from the same suit, but not necessarily in any particular order. A-K-J have the highest colour while 5-3-2 has the lowest. The hands rank by suit if two players have cards that share the same values. If you want to compare colours, make sure you compare the card that has the highest value. 
• Pair: Also known as Two of a Kind, this hand features two cards that follow the same rank. Compare the pair first when contrasting these hands. The highest oddball card wins if the pair is tied. The highest pair is A-A-K, and the lowest is 2-2-3.
• High Card: This is when none of the three cards fit in any of the above-mentioned. When this happens, compare the highest card from the get-go and move your way down. The best hand is A-K-J (when the suits are mixed) and 5-3-2 is the lowest one. Overall, you do not want to get this sequence, as it is considered the worst hand in the game. Ironically, it has a high probability of 74.39%.

Just knowing these online Teen Patti game sequences is not enough on their own. You need to play cautiously and raise your bets from small to bigger amounts as you go, especially if you are new to the Teen Patti game. Only then should you apply a Teen Patti sequence. It is also recommended that you play blind and have a great “poker face” so other players cannot predict your next move. Do not blame a bad streak on luck, and do not get nervous. Monitor other players’ patterns and behaviour closely while controlling your own. This is a game that requires skill and patience, so work on these attributes!

Teen Patti Variations: What Are They?

Just like with any other card game, there are Teen Patti variations. We will briefly go over some of them.

Mufliss: This is one of the Teen Patti variations that is very similar to the original game. It differs only in the fact that hand rankings are reversed. This means that the 2 card, which we consider as the lowest ranking card in the traditional online Teen Patti game, becomes the highest ranking card while Ace becomes the lowest.

999: In this variation, players strive to get a set that is closest to 9-9-9. Card suits do not matter here. All cards have their respective numbers. From A to 9 get numbers from 1 – 9 respectively, while the King, Queen and Jack get the number 0. You can alter the order of the cards so they become closer to 999.

Sudden Death: As the name suggests, this is one of the most hardcore Teen Patti variations. Sudden Death involves distributing one 52-pack card among all players. This Teen Patti variation is usually played in groups of 4, with each player receiving 13 cards. Players then drop cards until some cries “stop” while holding their pack of cards between their ring and thumb fingers. One by one, every player releases their hand of cards. When the first player shouts “stop,” you stop dropping cards and the other players can do the same. Pick the card which has the highest value out of the cards you still have in your hand. The winner is determined by comparing the highest card among all players.
